Dubai, the desert city, is renowned for its mesmerizing ultramodern architecture & lavish nightlife. However, Dubai has a totally different historical image that Dubai museum portray before the world.
One such museum that allows an insight to the history of United Arab Emirates is the Dubai Museum.
Dubai Museum is located at the south of Dubai Creek, in the Al Fahidi Fort, which ranks among the oldest existing buildings in Dubai. It was built in 1787 and served as a fort of defense and premises of the monarch of that time. Few years later it was turned into an arsenal for the weapons and artillery.
The fort was then converted to a museum in 1971 after it was renovated in the reign of Sheikh Rashid bin Saeed Al Maktoum, the ruler of Dubai. It was opened to public with the aim of showcasing the traditional way of life in Emirates.
At the entrance of the fort, one can witness the enthralling construction and various displays of the ancient UAE. The fort paves a way to the galleries that showcase the general culture of the Arab, specifically from the 1800s. The galleries have brought ancient Arab houses, mosques, souks, date farms, desert and marine life back to life.
It also features local antiques and local artifacts from some African & Asian countries that used to trade with Dubai. The artifacts range from recent discoveries to as old as from 3000 BC. One can also explore the affluent history of pearl-diving of the region, including authentic weights & scales used in the ancient UAE.
The dioramas of the museum tell the story of life of ancient Arab people before the advent of the oil in the region. It further showcases the struggles of the people as they lived in desert.
Visiting Dubai Museum, probably, is one of the best things to do in Dubai as it gives an insight into the history of this once simple & humble desert city of Emirates.
